Coffee, an indispensable part of our daily routine, is a favorite beverage for many. Most people start their day with a cup of coffee, but the impact of morning coffee on our bodies is often overlooked. Let's delve into how coffee affects cortisol, a hormone in our bodies.

What is Cortisol?

Cortisol is a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex (located above the kidneys) that regulates stress. It plays a crucial role in various physiological functions, such as blood pressure regulation, immune system strengthening, glucose control, inflammation suppression, and energy regulation. However, excessive cortisol secretion can lead to weakened immune function, increased risk of hypertension and diabetes, weight gain, and sleep disorders.

Typically, our cortisol levels peak in the morning (between 5:30 and 9:00 AM). During this time, cortisol rises along with body temperature, aligning with the natural wake-up rhythm. The average cortisol level ranges from approximately 5 to 23 µg/dL in terms of plasma cortisol levels. This value can vary depending on individual differences, health status, and sleep patterns. When consumed in this state, caffeine in coffee stimulates the central nervous system, leading to an increase in cortisol secretion. Drinking coffee in the morning usually results in a peak cortisol level within 30 minutes to an hour, providing an awakening effect.

Morning Coffee and Cortisol Relationship

However, frequent consumption of coffee immediately upon waking can cause a momentary spike in cortisol levels, adversely affecting our bodies. Adding caffeine stimulation to already elevated cortisol levels can induce anxiety, tension, and negatively impact sleep. Despite the immediate boost in alertness, regularly drinking coffee in the morning can be detrimental to your health in the long run and should be avoided.

When is the Right Time for Coffee?

Therefore, it is advisable to wait about an hour after breakfast before consuming coffee. If you haven't had breakfast, it's better to wait at least two hours before enjoying your coffee. This approach helps regulate the basic cortisol increase and the effects of coffee, reducing the strain on the body while still experiencing the awakening benefits.

If you feel the need to drink coffee in the morning, it's crucial to continuously monitor your health and find the optimal coffee time that suits your individual needs."
